5Rings-Environment

Making your environment work for you is something very different from simply being concerned about your personal and organizational environmental impact; it means setting up your environment and those of your team, suppliers, vendors, and customers, so that everyone involved is best situated to be the most impactful and effective that they can be in accomplishing the tasks they deal with most often.

Knowing why your entire team has an unusual number of headaches, reduced productivity, and increased absenteeism due to health problems for example could not only help your team feel a lot better and improve your productivity, it can also drop your company’s medical costs, improve team culture, and improve your overall results at scale. This is a real case study we identified that had real impacts on everyone who worked in that particular building, and it turns out that the building didn’t have enough fresh air circulating so by the end of the day, the CO2 build up in each office was enough to have all of those impacts, and the circulation system just spread it to every office equally. In Canada in winter opening the window wasn’t particularly a good answer, so half the year every tenant and their employees were all struggling every single day.

In the heat of summer that wasn’t much better. Solving that problem cost the building owners half a million dollars, saved them millions in law suit damages, and allowed all their tenants to hit whole new levels of success, many upgrading to other locations allowing that building in turn to raise rents with new tenants delighted to be there.

Before we identified the common problem no one thought there was one ~ they just felt sleepy, brain-dead, and non-productive after lunch every day.

How Your Environment Makes Or Breaks Your Success

In real estate they always talk about ‘location, location, location’ and there is so much more to that than even real estate experts understand. If a bartender loses an average of $1 a drink in tips for every step they take over three in order to make a drink (industry stats), then it’s in every bar’s best interests to make sure that everything they need is in 3 steps or less, right? Opening up a bar or restaurant where your employees in their key roles don’t have what they need where they need it, in ways they need it to be most productive is a recipe for delays, lower quality output, errors, and more.

The same applies to customers, vendors, and your whole supply chain.

A working environment that energizes your team, stimulates innovation and collaboration, and facilitates making those connections that help smooth out the rough patches every organization goes through periodically, that’s so much more productive than an environment where your team has to walk the length and breadth of the facility daily just to talk with their colleagues about a project they need to discuss means that no one’s going to do it unless or until they have to.

A culture that is embedded into the foundations of an organization will either raise or lower the ceiling for your teams, and from your first hire to your last, they either feed the culture or they destroy it, but the impact of each one is undeniable as it changes the team chemistry and the immediate outcomes for the whole team.

I can go on indefinitely listing examples of things few businesses and in particular few teams consider when they look for ways they can improve their team’s outcomes, but Environment is absolutely one of the most important multipliers any individual or organization faces in multiplying their success or failure.

If you want to see exactly how your environment is impacting your outcomes and what you can do to fix it, then this class is your first step into a much, much wider world of tools, strategies, and insights into how to turn your environment into one of your biggest assets.
